REQUIREMENTS TO PROPERLY DO THE COMB OVER HAIRCUT FROM birchbox.com
While the length of hair on the sides and neckline can vary, a classic comb-over shouldn’t get too short: Start with a #2 or #3 buzzer setting and work up to a #3 or #4 on top. Work with your hair’s natural shape to determine where you should part it.
Then start with clean, towel-dried hair.
Use a blow dryer on high heat for longer hair if you want added volume.
Take a dime-sized amount of styling cream for a looser, casual look, or a water-based pomade it you want more shine and hold. Work the product into your hair, beginning at the roots and starting from the back of the head.
For a clean part, run a comb lengthwise from the back of the head to your forehead, then separate the hair. For a messier part, just separate with your fingers.
The best way to end a good comb over haircut is to comb it on the side where you want it go specifically so it would be easier to cut off any excess hair and to neatly balance the cut on the side.

There are two ways to style a comb over, the first we call the “neat way“. This is more reminiscent of the classic 1950’s style comb over where the hair is neatly combed to the side starting from your hair part. Of course you will need to use your favorite pomade to achieve this, we recommend a medium to strong holding pomade to give you a nice hold and a wet looking finish.

A different way to style a comb over is what we call a loose comb over. You can put your own twist on this style as anything really goes. A loose comb over takes its own shape, usually having a lot more volume from the use of a blow dryer or opting to use a matte finish hairstyling product as oppose to a heavy pomade with a wet finish.
